Topic: Rise of Online Media
(From research paper: Fall or Rise? Mapping the development of traditional and digital Newspapers)
Online journalism is a contemporary form of journalism where editorial content is distributed via internet as opposed to publishing via print or broadcast.
In this topic I’m going to discuss the penetration of internet in Pakistan and how online journalism takeover the position of print media.
Pre- online media era was under the control of president Musharraf so the press was much restricted and it couldn’t publish freely what it wants to.
Where in U.S.A the first electronic newspaper was introduced in 1993 by NAA (Newspaper Association of America) after the invention of w.w.w ( worldwide web) by Tim Berners.
And after 3 years in 1996 Pakistan published its first online newspaper Dawn in English and it’s website (www.dawn.com) soon became successful with over 10 million page views per month.
After that in the same year another English Newspaper was appeared on internet and it’s name was The- News.
Jang newspaper, an Urdu newspaper, which we all have seen obviously, developed it’s website on the internet 2007. It has remained one of the biggest newspaper on the internet with its views more than 30 million per month.
As we know that online media is attracting it’s audience more than the print media so all the Sindhi, English and Urdu newspaper have developed their websites on the internet through which we can read anything anytime we want.
The major causes for the rise of online media are:
· It can be reached anywhere globally
· Immediacy: It’s fast, means it takes minimum time to get published where in print media there’s a long process even after publishing we have to wait for it’s circulation around the city.
· Hyperlinks: we can get in touch with the other linked content with it.
· Multimodality: this feature of online media has make a huge impact on audience because we can also get videos graphics along with the text which makes it more interesting.
· The last and the more important feature of online media is interactivity: where the writer or journalist can get feedback from its content and can even reply back if he/she wants to.
These all features and characteristics of online media has made it possible to understand and attract the audience by its content.
